Kalita Wave

The Kalita Wave is a popular pour-over coffee dripper known for its unique flat-bottom design, which promotes even extraction. Follow these steps to brew coffee using the Kalita Wave:

You'll Need:

  • Kalita Wave dripper
  • Kalita Wave paper filter
  • Fresh coffee beans
  • Burr grinder
  • Gooseneck kettle
  • Timer
  • Scale
  • Stirring stick
  • Mug

Step 1: Prepare Your Equipment

  • Place the Kalita Wave paper filter in the dripper.
  • Rinse the filter with hot water to eliminate any paper taste and preheat your Kalita Wave and mug. Pour the rinse water out of the dripper.

Step 2: Measure and Grind the Coffee

  • For a standard 12-ounce cup, use about 24-28 grams of coffee beans (adjust to taste).
  • Grind the coffee to a medium consistency, similar to sea salt.

Step 3: Heat the Water

  • Heat water to about 200°F (93°C).

Step 4: Begin Brewing

  • Start the timer and pour water over the coffee grounds in a circular motion, making sure all the grounds are saturated.
  • After this initial pour, wait for about 30 seconds.

Step 5: Continue Pouring

  • Slowly pour more water over the grounds in a controlled and steady manner.
  • Continue pouring in small increments until you reach the desired coffee amount, maintaining a consistent flow. For a 12-ounce cup, this might be about 400-450 grams of water.

Step 6: Stir and Let It Drip

  • Give the coffee a gentle stir to ensure even extraction.
  • Allow the coffee to drip into your mug. This process should take around 2-3 minutes.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

  • Once the dripping stops, remove the filter and enjoy your freshly brewed coffee.

The Kalita Wave's flat-bottom design and the three small drainage holes at the bottom promote an even extraction, resulting in a balanced and flavorful cup of coffee. Feel free to adjust the coffee-to-water ratio and grind size to create your perfect brew.
